| Have you ever felt lost, alone, unsure of what to do next in your life? Do you feel you have somehow missed what is important? Everywhere you turn, are you hearing a different message about what you should do, so that you are more confused than ever? Bring forth what is within you, that is the only place you can look to find out what is really the right thing to do. In our society, we are often directed to consult authority figures for guidance. The church and religious figures, the law and lawmakers, inspirational speakers and leaders, parents, grandparents and intuitive's of all kinds. Nobody tells us to trust ourselves. Everybody else thinks they know what is right for us. When we live according to what everybody else tells us is right, this puts obstacles in the way of us having the life we want, the life we dream of, the life that is right for us. To have unhindered living, we must look within ourselves and bring out what is within us. That is the only place we will find what is right. I cannot look to you and tell you what is right or judge your choices. I cannot tell you that you are wrong. I can only help you discover whether your choices are in alignment with what you say you believe, and whether or not what you say you believe is what you truly believe. For many of our beliefs are statements of inconsistency which we have adopted because someone else told us they were right. Have we really thought freely about whether we, as individuals, want to accept those beliefs as right? For example, I always accepted the belief that humans have souls and animals do not, that after humans die, their spirits live eternally in heaven or wherever you believe spirits go, but that animals do not share in this privilege. This caused me to value human life higher than animal life, and to think of myself as superior. Then one day I stopped to really freely consider whether or not I really believe this is true. What is a spirit? It is the electrical energy that leaves the body after the body no longer functions. That's what you are measuring when you have an EEG or EKG. Well, animals have this energy as well. Why can't they also have souls? Another things Jesus said was, When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom]." (Gospel of Thomas, verse 22). To me that says that we must realize that everything is one, there are no distinctions. All opposites represent a complete whole. Things that we think are not like us really are. We must realize that things which appear to be opposite to us are really part of us. The inner lis like the outer and the outer like the inner. The human is like the animal and the animal like the human. The man is like the woman and the woman is like the man. Light is like darkness and darkness is like light. As a proof of this, I would ask you, are light and dark the same, or different? If you say they are different, I would ask you to show me where the light stops and the dark begins. Let's say you turn out all the lights in your house and put a flashlight over in one corner. That corner is definitely lighter than the rest, but show me the dividing line where the darkness stops and the light begins. You can't do it, because there IS NO DIVIDING LINE. There is no one spot that everyone can agree as to where this line is. That's because we were never meant to draw lines. I no longer draw lines. I no longer see everything as black and white. And as soon as you realize that this distinction does not exist, you will feel more comfortable trusting yourself. You will feel more able to decide for yourself what is right without feeling you have crossed some line. There is no line. You are both light and dark, animal and human, male and female, tangible and intangible, human and divine. So now, do what I truly believe and how I act line up? If the animal and I are one, do I treat the animal with the respect I would treat myself with? If I am one with every blade of grass and with every drop of water, and with every molecule of everything that exists in this earth, do I treat those things with the same respect I would treat myself? If I and every other human being are one, do I treat them all with the same respect I want for myself? Even if they say and do things I don't like? If I and every other human being are one, do I treat my child and all children with the same respect I would treat an adult with? Do I respect their thoughts, feelings, choices, the same way I would respect my own? Even if they are behaving in a way I don't like? If my ideas and everybody else's ideas are one, do I treat other people's ideas with the same respect that I want my ideas treated with? Even if I totally disagree with them? Bring forth what is within you. Not all the things people have forced to be in you. Not all the things people have told you to have in you. Not all the aphorisms that society expects you to have in you. Ask yourself, "Is this really what I believe? Have I found proof within my own experience that makes me believe this, or have I just accepted other's authority for it? |
