Save the Universal Declaration of Human Rights! “By calling on individuals to sign the Universal Declaration, we are asking the citizens of the global village to empower themselves and their communities by standing behind its values and goals. But we are also asking that one united human family join together to protect and defend the rights of each other.” - Desmond Tutu, 10th December 2007. You can help to make human rights matter, to bring the freedoms and rights of the Universal Declaration back into daily consciousness and legal systems ‘round the world. Together we can send a powerful message to governments this December, on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration. Be part of it by signing – and asking your friends and family to sign – the Every Human Has Rights pledge here. The Elders and human rights luminaries will join together on December 6th calling on governments to hear the voices of civil society and individuals who, through their pledges, are saying that human rights matter, that upholding the principles of the Universal Declaration is the only way to ensure human security and human development is possible. In this sixtieth year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Every Human Has Rights campaign, inspired by The Elders asks individuals and groups to commit to the goals of the Universal Declaration. Why is this so important now? The world faces many crises, globally and locally. Financial markets are in turmoil, hundreds of millions are mired in lives of poverty and despair, environmental rights are too often ignored. So despite the strides we've made in the sixty years since the visionaries led by Eleanor Roosevelt drafted the Universal Declaration, human security and human development are far from assured. The fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration can still be realized – and this generation can ensure lives of dignity for all. Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, "Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
