| If we contemplate long enough, ponder long enough we begin to realise that perhaps there is something more then what we are being told, that perhaps we are being lead to believe what certain factions want us to believe. Life is very much an experiment with truth as we delve into exactly what the truth is, discover that the truth is not always what we are told despite the source. This is especially applicable when considering the essence that makes us who we are...that spark of light that is within. Are we just a body with a mind or are we much more ? How do we perceive ourselves and what influences the way we think and feel about who we are? We think and feel,we experience a vast range of emotions and we behave based on these factors. Many of our beliefs about ourselves stem from religion...God created Adam and Eve ,leading to the creation of the human race. God also provided the Ten Commandments contained within a book of law called the Bible. This provides boundaries and guidelines to govern our behaviour, how we should think and how we need to feel during certain circumstances. Whilst God provided the guide for life, sin raised it's ugly head and became a deterrent against deviating from the code of law contained within the Bible. The law present within our society today finds it's basis within the Bible...thou shalt not...or you will find yourself in jail, a more practical application of the sin factor. So God provided a perception of how we should be, which overtime has been internalised into ethics, morals and values. In the most basic terms, we start by perceiving ourselves as good or bad, based on the Law of God. | © 2009 J Picken "Silence is the best language for communication. It helps us understand and realise the eternal truths about the self, God and the world. In silence we are able to comprehend and express sincerely and powerfully the true values of the soul such as peace, love and joy. Silence is not the absence of thoughts but it is a state in which the mind is engaged in pure elevated thoughts that nurture these values within. The power of silence develops all mental and spiritual powers that are needed to tackle various situations successfully. " |
"Silence gives rest to the mind and this means giving rest to the body. Sometimes rest is the only medicine needed." | We are all graced by a body. A body that is composed of cells which divide and create muscle, bone and organs. We all are unique, not one of us is exactly the same, except for identical twins. We all have different ways of looking at the same thing, we all have our individual opinions and feelings. But is there more to us? The soul is touted to dwell within the body. It consists of the consciousness, personality and essence of what makes a person who they are. It is infinite and eternal, surviving death. In other words, a soul is a collective of any given person and is the influence that makes us who we are. So how does this affect how we perceive ourselves? We have a tendency to judge, put quite simply. We judge others and ourselves. We judge ourselves by measuring against others instead of just being who we are. It is the self judgement that influences our perceptions by basing ourselves on a false measuring stick. If we are all individuals with unique minds and souls, how can we judge ourselves using other people as a guide? It does not really make sense... The only one in this picture that has the right to judge is God...and that is based on actions and deeds, not in comparison to other people. |
So far we have the basic foundation for the development of self perception, religion and self judgement. Conditioning plays a large role also. How we are raised from children and the influencing factors in our lives provides solid grounds for various perceptions of self. If one is told something often enough, one will believe it eventually. For example...keep being told you're stupid and you will not only think you're stupid, but will inevitably begin to act that role. If you are repeatedly told you are too emotional from childhood, then chances are you will repress emotions and find it very difficult to express yourself in adulthood thinking that displays of emotions are undesirable. This would lead to a false perception of self. What and how we experience determines how we perceive ourselves over time. A constant run of bad relationships can lead to perceptions of inadequacy or that there is something wrong with you. Not only do we internalise this we actually believe it. The power of thought alters our self perceptions. Factors such as finance, career and family can significantly effect the way we see ourselves. More often then not it is the feeling of inadequacy or unworthiness that negatively impacts on our faith in ourselves. Money makes the world go round,as wrong as that is it is reality...have no money? How does that make you feel about yourself? Let's start with inadequate,unworthy,hopeless,useless....have no employment prospects? Guess what feelings pop up... then contemplate bad relationships and family issues...don't tell me...it's the same four emotions. So by experiencing these emotions we begin to believe that we are as each one suggests...we perceive ourselves as inadequate, worthless, hopeless and useless. | "A compassionate person develops an eye for spotting the qualities that make each person special. Even when others are at their lowest ebb, it is possible to help them restore their self-belief by keeping a firm, clear vision of their goodness and specialities. Taking a gently encouraging approach, I must never give up on anyone." |
"Let my eyes be a mirror for others, reflecting only the best and finest qualities." | Other intrinsic factors influence how we view our self and the opinions we carry about who we are. Health issues contribute to the entire self perception process. Serious illness or life threatening co-morbidity's can easily lead to a false vision of ourselves. Once more those four emotions rear their ugly heads...inadequacy,unworthiness,hopelessness and futility or uselessness. Throw in anger, frustration and even guilt and we have a combination which would shatter any-ones self esteem, let alone their self image. Our minds are very powerful and extremely underestimated in regards to the influence it has over not just our emotional, mental and spiritual status, but also our physical well being. By clinging onto a negative self perception,we have the ability to manifest the physical indicators, such as illness (serious or mild), repetitive illness (those illnesses that just keep coming back time after time), increased susceptibility to "catch whatever is going around", like the flu or a common cold. So negative and false perceptions can and often do lead to health issues, often this is the last resort and a hell of a kick in the butt. Basically, you are being told to wake up,take notice and do something about the negativity. |
In closing, there are many external and internal mechanisms, events and circumstances which influence exactly how we perceive ourselves. There are definitely many more then are covered in this article, however I have endeavoured to cover the more important factors. As much as external factors contribute to our self perception, our own internal processes also take equal responsibility. We buy into negative self talk, we do not always deal with our feelings and emotions adequately,we do not access preventative or good coping strategies and are quite happy to let things continue on as always eventually leading to sickness or a critical medical condition. Bottom-line is...if we do not look after ourselves...nobody else will. Only each individual can overcome the false beliefs about themselves...only each mind can harness the flow of negative thought patterns...only each individual can instigate better ways of coping and thereby diminishing the risk of compromised health. We can each provide the support, love and care for each other, but we cannot do the hard internal work for another... | "See through God's eyes and feel through God's heart and you will appreciate the value of every soul including yourself." |
